"Let's just write that our service costs 365 euros a year and has a 10% margin of error. We're being logical and transparent!"
I've heard this proposal many times, especially from tech companies or teams made up of very technical people. Spoiler: presenting data in a cold, purely logical way is the best way to destroy the perceived value of your product.
Behind a sales page (Landing Page) that truly turns visitors into customers there is almost always a cognitive bias studied by the greatest psychologists in the world: the Framing Effect.
The brain isn't a computer
Our brain doesn't process mathematical data neutrally. It is deeply influenced by the "context" in which that data is presented. Here's how this mechanism works, in 3 steps.
1. The emotional trap and Loss Aversion
The human mind feels real psychological pain when it has to part with its money or its certainties, a phenomenon known in behavioural psychology as Loss Aversion. If you present a price or a statistic the wrong way, you immediately trigger this "pain" and users run away, before they've even evaluated the offer objectively.
2. The positive frame
Let's take a classic clinical example. If a doctor told you that an operation had a "10% chance of failure", you'd probably be terrified. If instead they told you it had a "90% chance of success", you'd feel reassured. The mathematical figure is exactly the same, but the emotional frame completely changes your perception of the risk.
3. The micro-conversion and the broken-down pain
Let's apply the same concept to prices: never simply write "Pay €365 a year". That whole number looks like an insurmountable hurdle. Break the pain down! Rephrase the offer as "Just €1 a day". The brain unconsciously compares that figure with the cost of a daily cup of coffee, making the expense psychologically harmless, familiar and very easy to accept.
UX copywriting isn't manipulation
A key detail: the Framing Effect isn't a scam or a cheap trick. It's pure User Experience Copywriting.
It means presenting the truth and the real data in the way the human brain is most inclined to receive and understand them without going on alert. Combine this linguistic technique with a clean design, highlight the real benefits (instead of the sacrifices or the losses) and you'll see your conversion rates skyrocket. Go and check right now how you've "framed" the prices on your website!
